That was a long time ago but I remeber it to this day because I will never forget the kindness and generosity of spirit those professional hockey players showed to us young boys. They were our heroes and lived up to it not just on TV but in real life. drbarryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08930701223157666010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-23590366836074669502018-05-06T20:27:00.564-07:002018-05-06T20:27:00.564-07:00My Dad played junior b hockey in Sarnia with your ...My Dad played junior b hockey in Sarnia with your father. I recall watching Leaf games as a kid, and seeing him as one of the 6 players on the ice when the Leafs needed a goal to tie. That's not the time for a tough guy on the ice. Obviously, the Leafs thought more of him than just a goon. His immediate success in the WHA after that pretty much justifies that sentiment.Keith Allinghamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08041104370878685476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-34677963467602170072017-11-20T12:48:11.565-08:002017-11-20T12:48:11.565-08:00Looking in info of what i believe is his skates th...Looking in info of what i believe is his skates that i have it says it is 10 1/3 size it has a number 7 in the leather and it maple leafs on the logo and is made arpund 1961 to 69 Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-66776155161135040732017-11-08T12:39:17.006-08:002017-11-08T12:39:17.006-08:00Bobby Orr like; in that he'd play for nothing,...Bobby Orr like; in that he'd play for nothing, hit anything and score when it counts...He says, "boys the Sun is shining and we're go play".

4 Stanley Cups in 4 1/2 years...can anyone top that?

He took the leafs from last to best. He was great to watch. When he was on the ice, just like with Gretzky, I ignored everything else and watched him. He was either going to make something happen, or get killed trying. Great skills. Great hustle. At a time when players started caring more about negotiating their salaries than trying to earn their millions, Nikolai played like a guy determined to EARN his salary.

Arguably, Nikolai might have been the most talented offensive player the Leafs had in the 80-90's. Sadly, because of the injuries, that damn labour dispute...and just playing for the Leafs...he never got to shine. He took a POUNDING every game and kept coming back for more. But because he was on the Leafs, they didn't appreciate, or protect, him the way they should have. No big surprise there.

If he was 15 years older, the "too small for the NHL" forward would've found himself in the WHA. He'd probably be playing on a line with a Dave Semenko to protect him and he'd be a Top 5 point scorer every season. He might even be called "The Russian Gretzky" (he-he).
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-36241354218059947952017-06-26T19:16:33.856-07:002017-06-26T19:16:33.856-07:00Wendel was no doubt one of the greatest leafs of a...Wendel was no doubt one of the greatest leafs of all time. When you win eight Stanley Cups, more than any of these four greats, that alone builds you a huge case.

Furthermore, Kelly was statistically dominant. Posting double-digits in goals and assists is excellent for defensemen of any era - but Kelly did so during the tight-checking 50s. Arguably, he is the original offensive defenseman.

Defensively, during his first eight seasons Kelly's Wings finished first or second in both goals against and goals for/against differential. Bobby Orr, by contrast, never fared better than third in goals against with the Bruins, although they did have just one first place finish in goals for/against. Let's also keep in mind Kelly's best years preceeded the Norris Trophy or use of +/- ratio.

Last but not least, Kelly dominated in both forward and defense and was a core (or perhaps THE core) player of two dynasties. That should settle his case to be second greatest (maybe even greatest).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-67395432146795101892017-05-18T13:12:56.878-07:002017-05-18T13:12:56.878-07:00When Turk was 18 he played with the 1933 Relief Ca...When Turk was 18 he played with the 1933 Relief Camp All Stars in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba.
