You may like to know that Red Kelly is a cousin (his mother was a Furlong and so was my mother) and, as a boy of about 9 years old, my uncle, Bill Furlong, took my mother, my brother and I to the old Detroit Olympiad (about 1962) to see the Leafs play. My uncle had contacted Red to meet him outside the dressing room after the game. When we went down there, I was shocked and stunned to see you come out of the dressing room and I almost passed out. You were nice enough to give me an autograph, which I still have and have cherished (thanks again). Red finally came out and we all talked but, it was meeting you which made the trip worthwhile and still so memorable for me, as I was a goaltender and always said I was "Johnnie Bower" when I played. Still think you are the greatest ever, and wish you all the best!!Farmer@teksavvy.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-58081449455855453342015-06-25T09:57:17.985-07:002015-06-25T09:57:17.985-07:00Because of injuries, Bower was in goal for only tw...Because of injuries, Bower was in goal for only two of the Leafs' Stanley Cup-clinching games. In 1962, Don Simmons was the goalie in Game 6 of the finals when the Leafs beat the Hawks, 2-1, to win the Cup. In 1967, Terry Sawchuck won Game 6 of the finals against the Habs, 3-1, as the Leafs won their fourth Cup under Punch Imlach. That victory was sandwiched around back-to-back Cup wins by the Habs in 1965 and 1966 and then again in 1968 and 1969. The Leafs' win prevented the Canadiens from winning the Cup for five straight seasons for the second time.Paul Hummelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305337.post-89467078874135508502014-03-06T09:15:46.631-08:002014-03-06T09:15:46.631-08:00I was a young goalie back in the mid-sixties, and ...I was a young goalie back in the mid-sixties, and Johnny Bower was like a God to me. I met Gump Worsley and Jaques Plante, but I never met Johnny. I truly wish I could could tell him how powerfully he influenced me. She even asked you to address it to a man's name (I was such an idiot 10 years ago) and you thought was weird as well? I'd love it if you could forgive my stupidity and meet me again to sign your stick and address it to me! You rock!
